Dr. Tanya Mueller
STEM

Dr. Tanya Mueller has her Bachelor of Science in Biology from Virginia Tech and both her Master of Science and Doctorate in Anthropology from the University of New Mexico. Though much of her research has focused on the behavioral ecology of various species of mammals, her doctoral research focused her interests on the development of adolescence as a distinct life history stage. Her work with baboons paved the way for her to study adolescence in indigenous populations, identifying how different this stage of life is for American teenagers. She is currently employed by both the New Mexico Academy for the Media Arts, where she teaches high school math and biology, and Central New Mexico Community College, where she teaches a variety of anthropology courses. She regularly encourages students to fail, not in the sense of failing grades, but rather to take risks and try new things, because that is the only way we learn. Dr. Mueller also sponsors the eSports team and the SuperComputing Challenge and has emotional support rats in her classroom.

Chris López
Visual Arts

I was born and raised in Northern New Mexico where he learned to create art, raise animals, and grow food. I am from a strong family of educators and artists, which helped shape me into the artist he is today. In 2000, Mr. López graduated from the University of New Mexico with a BFA in Painting and Drawing. He is a father of two wonderful children, my greatest creations. He is an active artist and art teacher who incorporates his education as an artist to set a positive example for anyone who is working towards the path of art and creativity. The spirituality of telling stories, he feels, is important as moments in time that represent experiences, memories, and visions of our creative history.

Anthony Conforti
Film and Media

My name is Anthony Conforti. Before helping to launch the school in 2008, I spent 30+ years as a media industry professional. I’ve worked as a script doctor, production manager, and editor on television dramas. Then I moved into broadcast news as a news and documentary producer. I spent a lot of time working in Central America and published a book about that phase of my life, which is titled “Acalan”. In the early 2000’s I was involved in the implementation of the state film incentives, which led to the creation of the Media Arts Academy. The founding mission of our school is to foster an interest in the media industry as a career pathway.
